In northern states, the chill of fall comes on quickly, and it becomes<strong> harder and harder to grow profitable yields<\/strong>. Without seasonal extension tools, it\u2019s time to shut it down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with a little cover, most farmers have a variety of crops to pick from. Quick-growing selections, soil conditioners, and<strong> hearty roots and greens<\/strong> are some of the best for cooler seasons. Depending on what is chosen, there may be tending to do even as winter draws near.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to know <strong>which plants work for your farm and region<\/strong>. These allow you to grow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/season-extenders-and-growing-fall-vegetables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beyond terminal frost dates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their <strong>built-in complexity<\/strong> is completely up to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Low tunnels<\/strong> are an easy thing to add to crop rows of plants that are frost-tolerant, but won\u2019t survive a hard freeze. The tunnel is usually covered by<strong> frost cloth<\/strong>. The structure promotes heat within the tunnel that protects the soil underneath to a degree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2019\/10\/how-to-build-a-cold-frame-in-20-minutes-for-under-40\/\"><strong>Cold frames<\/strong><\/a> are also an option, and you can make one of these with repurposed windows. They offer crops a more durable solution for cold protection. <strong>Cloches<\/strong>, too, are a way to keep plants warm in the cold, but they typically cover one to two plants at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you decide to include season extension on the farm, get your plans together earlier in the year, in time for preparations to begin in fall before frost occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crops for September<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <strong>root veggies<\/strong>\u00a0to <strong>hardy greens<\/strong>, all the way to <strong>cover crops<\/strong>, there are plenty of ways to continue growing even as the weather cools and frigid temperatures set in. The resulting debris protects and conditions the soil below, depending on which crops are chosen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Winter-hardy crops<\/strong> survive through winter, and are terminated manually in spring. Attention should be paid to whether or not conditions exist that allow the crop to <strong>survive the colder seasons<\/strong>. Then the crops can be chopped and dropped, or crimped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mixed covers<\/strong> offer multiple benefits, each determined by the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/search?q=cover+crops&amp;options%5Bprefix%5D=last\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeds<\/a> in the mix. In areas where the cold comes later, or doesn\u2019t come at all, successions of beets sown a couple of weeks apart offer food and revenue all winter long. Start in September, and continue sowing through March in this case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In colder areas, protection in the coldest season is needed. Any will work, as most beets withstand light frosts even without it. In the very cold parts of winter in areas where winter is serious business, <strong>cold frames help<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In areas where cold protection isn\u2019t present, sowing a crop of beets now is just fine. Most varieties have a <strong>short number of days to maturity<\/strong>. Iceberg types usually don\u2019t need more than three months for full formation. Baby greens are easy for farmers in every region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because lettuce is always in high demand, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/collections\/lettuce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so much to pick from<\/a>. Growing through frost is possible, too, as even supple greens have a little<strong> cool-weather tolerance<\/strong>. In areas where they won\u2019t withstand the strength of the first frost, baby greens are just fine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian greens like <strong>mizuna<\/strong>, <strong>bok choy<\/strong>, and <strong>tatsoi<\/strong> have short maturation periods and are usually ready within one to two months. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicalinterests.com\/collections\/arugula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Arugula<\/strong><\/a> can handle temperatures down to the low 20s (~-7\u00b0C). There\u2019s little to stop you from being successful with smaller varieties like <strong>French Breakfast <\/strong>or <strong>Cherry Belle<\/strong>. These are ready within a month, meaning even farms with cold winter looming can glean another yield.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In protected areas, or those with milder cold seasons, larger, more specialized varieties are an option. For instance, the Whole Grains Council recognizes September as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholegrainscouncil.org\/whole-grains-101\/grain-month-calendar\/rice-and-wild-rice-september-grains-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice and Wild Rice Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is possible to have a year-round supply of forage for livestock. Plant <strong>ryegrass<\/strong> in September to provide for herds in colder seasons. <strong>Kentucky bluegrass<\/strong> and <strong>tall fescue<\/strong> are other viable options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only thing to note before planting these is whether or not you\u2019re working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCRS<\/a>. Due to its size, it can be interplanted with beets and greens. Even orchards benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2015\/10\/how-to-plant-garlic\/\">garlic plantings<\/a>. While farms with later frosts should wait to plant, those with a quick onset of frost can plant now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will take roughly nine months for garlic to fully mature, but it\u2019s worth it.
