However, over time, it is increasingly apparent that these are not the best modes of control, due to their <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2021\/05\/survey-finds-pesticides-threaten-important-soil-ecosystems\/\"><strong>negative effects<\/strong><\/a> on plant nutrition, animals, humans, and the local environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this doesn\u2019t mean we should abandon pesticides altogether. Instead, we should take an approach that <strong>includes all other methods of control<\/strong> before pesticides are the chosen strategy. This is what integrated pest management (IPM) is all about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do farms carry out integrated approaches? There are myriad ways to do this. These involve <strong>biological<\/strong>, <strong>cultural<\/strong>, <strong>mechanical<\/strong>, and as a last resort, <strong>chemical controls<\/strong>. When combined, these strategies provide solutions to pest problems that offer the longest-lasting effects. These do the least harm to the surrounding environment, and to local human and animal health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPM starts with <strong>monitoring and research<\/strong> of prominent pests on a farm. With this knowledge farmers are informed about the most effective ways to reduce pest pressure. Instead of jumping straight to systemic pesticide use that can damage waterways and lead to higher numbers of pests in the long run, <strong>non-chemical options<\/strong> are employed first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This limits the pest proliferation that causes resistances to pesticides over time. It also lessens runoff that pollutes waterways, and <strong>prevents <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2016\/08\/dicamba\/\">pesticide drift<\/a><\/strong> that causes damage to nearby farms, people, and natural areas. Overall, IPM offers the most effective methods for reducing and sometimes eliminating pest pressures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of Control<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The multiple means of pest reduction included in IPM are most effective when combined with an understanding of the land, the plants, and the pests in question. This combination of strategies is the best for <strong>keeping pest numbers down on your farm<\/strong>. Things like <strong>irrigation<\/strong>, <strong>soil cultivation<\/strong>, and <strong>controlling weeds<\/strong> are just a few of the cultural aspects of the farm. The overall goal of cultural controls is to make the farm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vegento.russell.wisc.edu\/ipm\/cultural-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less suitable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for pests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use techniques, like<strong> removing weeds that harbor pests<\/strong>, or leaving some weeds as a trap crop away from your production area to be removed when pests are at their highest numbers. <strong>Delayed plantings<\/strong> also keep pests away from plants, as they may be more prevalent earlier in the season when temperatures are lower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Crop rotation<\/strong> makes it less likely that soil-borne pests build up in soil to take hold of certain crops. Letting fields lie fallow between seasons is another way to do this, as is tillage to kill belowground larvae.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best cultural control is <strong>planting varieties that are resistant to pests<\/strong> common in your area. While you can purchase massive amounts of beneficial insects that prey on pests, the best strategy is to plant insectary plants to give them a place to live. These insects are common across North America, and with ample plantings it\u2019s not hard to bring them in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best insectary plants are<strong> native ones<\/strong>. These invite your primary predators, like ovipositing wasps, lacewings, ladybugs, and predatory thrips (to name a few). They also bring in native pollinators that assist you in vegetable and fruit production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common natives like <strong>goldenrod<\/strong>, <strong>sunflowers<\/strong>, <strong>asters<\/strong>, and <strong>yarrow<\/strong> are not hard to grow, and provide other environmental benefits, like soil and water preservation. They host other wildlife too. They don\u2019t require extra water, fertilizer, or pampering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hort.extension.wisc.edu\/articles\/plant-flowers-to-encourage-beneficial-insects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a good list of plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that bring in the predators you need to <strong>reduce pest pressure<\/strong> in your crops and it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll plant those plants every year. For instance, in early spring when flea beetles are common, a <strong>row cover<\/strong> is a great option, and an example of a mechanical method of control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rodent traps<\/strong> are useful tools as well, which prevent rodents from feeding on your corn, tomatoes, and grains you worked hard to grow. In greenhouses, <strong>yellow sticky traps<\/strong> keep gnats and flies from devastating your plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mulching<\/strong> is a dual-purpose mechanical control that keeps away slugs and other pests, while helping your soil retain moisture and regulate temperature. Natural mulches break down and feed your soil with nutrition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong <strong>stream of water<\/strong> from a hose is a prime example. Spray your aphid infested plants with a blast of water to remove them from your plants and stop their feeding. After you employ the other methods listed here, you may not need chemicals. But in some cases, pesticides are necessary. If you are going to use them, <strong>always read the label<\/strong>. The label is the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On farms, overuse of pesticides <a href=\"https:\/\/ipm.ucanr.edu\/agriculture\/floriculture-and-ornamental-nurseries\/managing-pesticide-resistance\/#gsc.tab=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results in resistances<\/a> built by the pests in question, or it wipes out the beneficial insects that provide the most effective forms of control. It also may endanger other animals or humans in the spray area. This is why it\u2019s important to <strong>consider toxicity and necessity<\/strong> before choosing chemical controls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <strong>targeted<\/strong>, <strong>pest-specific pesticides<\/strong> is better than using broad-spectrum systemic ones, as they keep control within the range that you need without prompting undesirable effects. These\u00a0 include pollution, or danger to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four modes of administration, or how these pesticides work on pests in the first place:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insects eat it as <strong>stomach poison<\/strong>; the poison kills on contact; the poison is absorbed by the plant and then eaten by the insect; or the poison kills by insects breathing it in or absorbing it via membranes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penn State has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/ipm-tactic-chemical-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a handy guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for chemical controls that lists hierarchies of toxicity among different types of pesticides. <strong>They are as follows, from least to most toxic:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Type of pesticide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soaps &#8211;&gt;microbial products &#8211;&gt;insect growth regulators &#8211;&gt;botanical pyrethrins &#8211;&gt;chlorinated hydrocarbons &#8211;&gt;carbamates &#8211;&gt;organophosphates<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Formulation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enclosed bait &#8211;&gt;granular &#8211;&gt;dust &#8211;&gt;water solution &#8211;&gt;water emulsion<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oil solution &#8211;&gt;aerosol &#8211;&gt;emulsifiable concentrate &#8211;&gt;liquid concentrate<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta opinion-farmers-are-overusing-insecticide-coated-seeds\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"Opinion: Farmers Are Overusing Insecticide-Coated Seeds\" href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2022\/03\/farmers-are-overusing-neonicotinoid-insecticide-coated-seeds\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">Opinion: Farmers Are Overusing Insecticide-Coated Seeds<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #122108; font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; background-color: #fdfff7;\">Studies suggest that seeds coated with neonicotinoid insecticides may harm nontarget insects, mammals and birds.
