The number of U.S. farms producing food for consumption has been steadily declining for years, making us more reliant on other countries as we resort to importing necessary foods. This shows in America\u2019s growing agricultural trade deficit, projected to reach<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agri-pulse.com\/articles\/21980-usda-raises-forecast-for-fy25-ag-trade-deficit\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a record-breaking $45.5 billion in 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it doesn\u2019t have to be this way; farmers know how to feed us. It\u2019s backward government policies that are standing in their way. We need Congress to reevaluate the subsidies provided to big ag, and prioritize farmers growing and raising nutritious food for our nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta read-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\"><a class=\"full\" title=\"READ MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2018\/10\/can-cities-produce-enough-food-to-feed-their-citizens\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">READ MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Can cities grow enough food to feed their citizens?<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rstreet.org\/commentary\/the-high-price-of-federal-agriculture-subsidies-whats-the-true-cost-of-farming-as-usual\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taxpayer dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are propping up some of the largest industrial agriculture operations in the country, allowing the big to get bigger. At the same time, small and mid-sized farms are being driven out of existence. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversubsidizes the production of corn and soybeans, which are used for livestock feed, ethanol, and to create sugars, starches, and oils that end up in highly processed foods. The highly concentrated nature<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmaction.us\/agriculture-consolidation-data-hub\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of our food and farm system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, facilitated by the government\u2019s prioritization of these commodity crops, has made it increasingly difficult for our farmers to supply us with nutritious food crops like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmaction.us\/subsidies-sources\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most recently available farm subsidy data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that the majority of government subsidies go toward commodity crop production, while just four percent go toward fruit and vegetable production, which the USDA ironically deems \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/services\/grants\/scbgp\/specialty-crop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specialty crops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d New York fruit grower Chip Kent said he has only ever received $500 in subsidies; meanwhile, a handful of the largest and wealthiest operations are raking in 80 percent of the billions of available dollars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe could use a little help. Who\u2019s gonna grow our food? You really want to buy it all from overseas?\u201d Kent said in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CFcQOSzetOs\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent CNBC story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that is becoming a reality; according to the USDA, our fruit and vegetable supply is increasingly made up of imports. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/chart-gallery\/gallery\/chart-detail?chartId=107008\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we imported 60 percent of our fresh fruit and 38 percent of our vegetables. In 2019, we imported<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/gats\/default.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$15.7 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worth of produce from Mexico and by 2023, that number increased to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/gats\/default.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$21 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our government\u2019s misplaced prioritization of growing and exporting low-value crops, which primarily benefits the corporations dominating our food system, is reflected in America\u2019s public health. As government subsidies support the production of sugars, starches, and oils, prices on those products remain relatively low. Over time, those foods become the most readily accessible and available, and\u00a0 fresh produce is priced higher and is less accessible. Most of the American population is not consuming enough fruits and vegetables,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/amber-waves\/2024\/september\/satisfying-fruit-and-vegetable-recommendations-possible-for-under-3-a-day-data-analysis-shows#:~:text=About%2090%20percent%20eat%20too,%2C%20convenience%2C%20and%20other%20factors.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which determined that 80 percent of people eat too little fruit and 90 percent do not eat enough vegetables.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/10\/211014102038.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Americans are increasingly consuming ultra-processed food (like frozen pizza, soda, and fast food), with over half of our population\u2019s caloric intake coming from ultra-processed foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta learn-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\"><a class=\"full\" title=\"LEARN MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2021\/03\/opinion-growing-food-and-protecting-nature-dont-have-to-conflict\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">LEARN MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Opinion: Growing food and protecting nature are not conflicting goals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are on track to have a trade deficit for five of the last seven years, our public health is at risk, and our fruit and vegetable farmers are struggling to stay afloat. The ability to reverse these harmful trends is in the hands of our government. To begin to undo this damage, the next farm bill must better support those farmers who are providing nutritious food for our people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth noting that the soybean industry, which receives substantially more government support, has an industry value estimated at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/specialtycropindustry.com\/specialty-crop-industry-magazine-trade\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 percent lower than<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that of fruits and vegetables. Farm Action\u2019s research determined that by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farmaction.us\/balancing-the-agricultural-trade-deficit-with-higher-value-food-crops\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shifting less than 0.5 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of current farm acreage to fruit and vegetable production, we could balance the 2023 agriculture trade deficit of $32 billion due to the higher value of food crops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must stop outsourcing what we can grow ourselves; a different way is possible, and a healthy, sustainable food system is attainable.
