Instead, she will return to her roots in rural Nevada. For Thompson, this is not just a career path but a calling deeply rooted in her heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve always had a deep attachment to veterinary medicine. My family has a cattle ranch, and I am sixth generation. Between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmjournalfoundation.org\/_files\/ugd\/cfcaf3_a4daf753ad254d31a95ce13f47636e5d.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three and four percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of new veterinary graduates pursue careers focusing on livestock or food systems. In 2022, more than 500 counties in the US were facing severe shortages of food animal veterinarians, some with no vet service at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thompson\u2019s hometown of Tonopah, Nevada is part of a 23,000-square-mile area she says the USDA has identified as a veterinary desert.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The only time vets came to the Thompson ranch was for preventative care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In regions like these where agriculture is the backbone of the economy, the absence of veterinarians can spell disaster. Thompson remembers having to trailer their horses to a vet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the veterinarian 1.5 hours away couldn\u2019t treat the issue [typically colic],\u201d she says, \u201cwe were not in a position to seek advanced care [colic surgery] due to it being another four- to fivehour drive. Early detection is critical in preventing disease outbreaks, such as the 2015 bird flu that killed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details\/?pubid=86281#:~:text=Between%20December%202014%20and%20June%202015%2C%20more%20than,destroyed%20to%20stop%20the%20spread%20of%20the%20disease.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 million turkeys and chickens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Midwest states. It also heightens the danger of zoonotic diseases, which can pass from animals to humans. There is a danger that as these shortages continue, preventative care\u2014which includes deworming and livestock vaccinations\u2014will not happen. The ripple effect of inadequate veterinary care in rural communities, according to a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmjournalfoundation.org\/post\/rural-veterinary-shortages-create-risks-for-food-system-report-says\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commissioned by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmjournalfoundation.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farm Journal Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has the potential to affect an estimated 3.7 million livestock-related positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We are worried about our capacity to identify as well as respond to diseases, whether that is endemic disease and\/or foreign animal diseases,\u201d says Dr. Rosslyn Biggs, DVM, and director of continuing education and beef cattle extension specialist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.okstate.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma State University (OSU) College of Veterinary Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the driving forces behind rural vet shortages is that starting salaries are not always compatible with vets who work in urban centers.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/oes291131.htm#st\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, veterinarians in rural areas earn between $61,470 and $73,540 a year\u2014roughly half of what they could make in a city.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166634\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166634\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"627469\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #627469;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-166634 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-vets-photo-from-Aimee-Thompson-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-vets-photo-from-Aimee-Thompson-1.webp 960w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-vets-photo-from-Aimee-Thompson-1-260x346.webp 260w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-vets-photo-from-Aimee-Thompson-1-768x1024.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Aimee Thompson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSalaries in the rural, large, mixed or food animal space,\u201d says Biggs, \u201chave been historically lower than those in urban or other segments of veterinary medicine.\u201d This difference makes it difficult for newly graduating vets. In<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-01\/Rural-Veterinary-Workforce-Act-issue-brief-Digital-updated-1.25.24.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, 83 percent of veterinarians graduated with an average student debt of $185,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/grants\/programs\/veterinary-medicine-loan-repayment-program\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VMLRP) through the USDA Food and Agriculture Institute (NIFA) is designed to help more food animal and public health veterinarians relocate to those rural areas facing veterinary shortages. The program will pay off up to $75,000 of each veterinarian\u2019s student loans if they practice in an area designated as being short of vets for a minimum of three years. Since the program\u2019s inception in 2010, it has helped more than 795 veterinarians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need, however, has outstripped VMLRP\u2019s ability to respond. The bipartisan<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-01\/Rural-Veterinary-Workforce-Act-issue-brief-Digital-updated-1.25.24.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural Veterinary Workforce Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could change this. The legislation would end the federal taxation the USDA is currently required to pay on behalf of the award recipient. This could potentially free 39 percent of the allocated money for the VMLRP, creating significant funds for new recipients. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This bill was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bills\/118\/hr4355#:~:text=This%20bill%20is%20in%20the%20first%20stage%20of,on%20another%20bill%20with%20identical%20or%20similar%20provisions.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into Congress on June 23, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But will it be enough to stem the tide? More than just monetary considerations\u2014the life of a rural vet isn\u2019t easy. \u201cIt\u2019s hard work. It is long hours,\u201d says Biggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Thompson graduates, she will begin a contract with a veterinary clinic in Elko, Nevada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPart of my contract is that I get to do outreach to areas that don\u2019t have veterinary care,\u201d she says. Twice a month, she will travel long distances to remote communities and provide vet services. This can, for many vets, be isolating and another reason they are deterred from entering into rural practice. Thompson credits her upbringing with making her prepared for these challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI grew up learning how to navigate without resources, coming from that background has prepared me the most,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/avmajournals.avma.org\/view\/journals\/javma\/236\/8\/javma.236.8.849.xml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Veterinary Medicine Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AVMA), 45 percent of vets practicing in rural areas are more likely to leave if they come from an urban background. Those that choose to return to urban practice say lack of time off and family concerns played a factor in their decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A shortage of vets in rural areas also means a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/avmajournals.avma.org\/view\/journals\/javma\/236\/8\/javma.236.8.849.xml\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of mentorship for graduating vets. In essence, no one guides young vets through the practicalities of rural veterinary life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something Thompson herself identifies as important. \u201cEventually, I would like to set up in a rural area,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I definitely need that mentorship coming out of school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta learn-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\"><a class=\"full\" title=\"LEARN MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vetvoice.com.au\/articles\/life-as-a-rural-farm-animal-veterinarian\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">LEARN MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Learn more about life as a rural veterinarian.<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At OSU, things are slightly better than at other veterinary colleges. In 2023, 25 percent of OSU grads entered large or mixed animal practice, while the national average historically fluctuates between 10 and 15 percent. It is something upon which the college is hoping to build. Currently developing a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bovinevetonline.com\/news\/veterinary-education\/developing-center-rural-veterinary-medicine\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Rural Veterinary Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the goal, among other things, is to provide that much-needed early guidance. The current vision for the program includes a service component in underserved\/rural regions as well as outreach programs to mentor youth to help them prepare for and develop an interest in food medicine veterinary practice. The Integrated Beef Cattle Program for Veterinarians has already proven to be invaluable as part of the larger vision for the center. \u201cTwenty vet students with interest in beef cattle practice are paired alongside 20 veterinarians who have some experience in beef animal medicine,\u201d says Biggs.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166635\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166635\" style=\"width: 996px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"726d63\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #726d63;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-166635 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-Vets-photo-courtsey-of-Aimee-Thompson-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"996\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-Vets-photo-courtsey-of-Aimee-Thompson-1.webp 996w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-Vets-photo-courtsey-of-Aimee-Thompson-1-269x346.webp 269w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-Vets-photo-courtsey-of-Aimee-Thompson-1-797x1024.webp 797w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Modern-Farmer-Vets-photo-courtsey-of-Aimee-Thompson-1-768x987.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Aimee Thompson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another solution, according to Thompson, is to create more opportunities for youth to be exposed to livestock, and have ranchers, farmers and vets come to speak to school-age children. \u201cWhen I was in school,\u201d she says, \u201cwe had an agriculture day in which we\u2019d go out with the local 4H club and they had animals and would teach us handling and proper care. We got to interact with the animals, particularly livestock, and got a little more comfortable with that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eighty percent of those interested in rural veterinary care have had a significant history of livestock exposure, says Thompson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, Biggs acknowledges that being a rural vet is not easy. For one, you are going to get dirty. \u201cBut,\u201d she says, \u201cbeing in rural communities and serving farmers and ranchers\u2014there is no better work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Aimee Thompson graduates from Washington State University Veterinary College in May 2025, she will not be heading to a bustling city or a thriving suburban clinic like many of her peers.
