A gentleman from North Africa was given a generic food hamper and he had to ask what the dried bag of pasta was, and what to do with it. \u201cHow unfair is it for us,\u201d says Scott, \u201cto say we are doing things to feed everyone in the community but yet people we are feeding don\u2019t know what they are eating.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wood Buffalo Food Bank, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, fed 15,000 clients in 2021\/22. Photography courtesy of Newton Food Pantry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott\u2019s realization underscores a significant challenge faced by food banks and pantries across North America: Food is more than just fuel for the body. It carries deep significance that connects individuals to their beliefs and heritage. Food banks, though, are non-profit entities and, like the rest of us, are challenged by the high cost of food. This often means that they buy calorie-rich inexpensive products: canned soups, tinned fish, or dried pasta. But, these foods are not always the only foods people want.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta take-action\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"TAKE ACTION\" href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/ways-to-give\/food-donations#:~:text=When%20you%20donate%20food,\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">TAKE ACTION<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Donate to a food bank through Feeding America.<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feedback received by the the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/coming-off-best-year-yet-ottawa-food-bank-volunteers-plant-okra-for-improved-ethnocultural-food-availability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ottawa Food Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a pilot project conducted between 2019 and 2020 indicated a desire for ethnocultural vegetables, such as okra, a traditional staple in African diets, to be available at food banks. Photography by Savannah Colevans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognizing the importance of culturally relevant food, Dan Edwards, executive director of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, shared how it has always tried to incorporate specific items into its hampers. \u201cWe\u2019ve made sure to add supplies for Bannock, a traditional Indigenous food, when it\u2019s within our budget and capacity,\u201d says Edwards. Items such as corn flour, Halal meat, lentils and spices are now added to food hampers if requested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Newton, Massachusetts, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newtonfoodpantry.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton Food Pantry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NFP) started offering culturally relevant foods during the early days of the pandemic. \u201cWe offered things like celery, garlic, ginger, tofu, and Russian cheese,\u201d says Sindy Wayne, board president of the food bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flash forward to 2024: Client registration forms and intake reflect a significant percentage of food pantry clients as Russian\/Ukrainian, Chinese (Mandarin\/Cantonese speaking), and Hispanic\/Latino (Spanish speaking). Photography by Savannah Colevans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our hope is that, by offering culturally relevant food, our clients know that we see them beyond their need for food,\u201d says Denise Daniels, pantry manager at the Newton Food Pantry. \u201cIn their time of need, we hope they will create familiarity and a sense of home through their meals.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of why clients return to the food bank is that it supplies food items with which they are familiar and like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those returning clients, Daniels recalls, was a woman from Guatemala who noticed that the pantry was stocking a cassava-based cracker. Excited to find an item she was familiar with from her home country, she has returned multiple times to the pantry. The pantry also stocks buckwheat flour and eggplant spread for recently immigrated Russian\/Ukrainian clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/hunger-in-america\/latino-hunger-facts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeding America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that of the 47 million people in 2023 who experienced food insecurity, 14 million self-identified as Latino, and more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingamerica.org\/hunger-in-america\/black-communities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Black Americans could not access enough food to lead healthy active lives. Photography by Savannah Colevans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are so many different cultures throughout the United States,\u201d says Molly Kern, chief executive officer of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slofoodbank.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLO Food Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in San Luis Obispo County, California. \u201cWhat mattered most to us was listening to our community and understanding what their needs were.\u201d Staff at the food bank spoke with nearly 350 community members, finding out what challenges they had accessing food, and, most importantly, what role food plays in their lives. The feedback they received was incorporated into the food bank\u2019s 2023-2028 strategic plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta learn-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"LEARN MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/uconnruddcenter.org\/cultural-foods\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">LEARN MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Learn more about the importance of culturally relevant food.<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegardless of cultural background, a big trend was looking for fresh fruits and vegetables,\u201d says Kern. In San Luis Obispo county, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/data\/topics\/people-society\/population-and-demographics\/our-changing-population\/state\/california\/county\/san-luis-obispo-county\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is slightly over 280,000. Between 2010 and 2022, the Hispanic\/Latino community grew 3.3 percent to become almost a quarter of the area\u2019s overall population at 24.1 percent. Dried beans, fresh chilis, onions, and tomatillos, as well as fresh tortillas, are items familiar to Latino traditions and rank high on the list of foods that are available on food pantry shelves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe measure satisfaction by how fast things fly off our shelves,\u201d says Kern. \u201cAnd when people know you are listening to them and caring for them, and working to improve,it builds trust.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michelle Scott, the communications and development manager for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, recalls the lightbulb moment that cemented the importance of having culturally relevant food available for their clients.
