It wasn\u2019t long before she grew disenchanted with the amount of plastic she was using.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur major goal is to support the ecosystem, heal nature, and be more attuned with nature\u2019s processes,\u201d says Bosch, who farms using organic and regenerative agricultural practices. \u201cAs I researched more about soil health, I started to learn how plastic impacts microorganisms in the soil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta read-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"READ MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2024\/02\/plastic-farms-stop-plasticulture\/\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">READ MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>A plastic tsunami is taking over farms. What can stop it?<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start thinking about all the ways we use plastic in the garden\u2014seedling trays, landscape fabric, plant pots, to name a few\u2014and it\u2019s hard to unsee all that planetary warming fossil fuel-produced plastic. Most of it tends to get used for a season or two before ending up in a landfill, where the consequences for the planet and ourselves can be dire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know about the issue of plastics in the ocean. The United Nations has<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-42225915\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declared the plastic pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of our oceans \u201ca planetary crisis.\u201d Each year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/article\/plastic-pollution#:~:text=Production%20is%20expected%20to%20double,of%20coastline%20around%20the%20world.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to National Geographic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about eight million tons of plastic waste ends up in oceans. Yet, there\u2019s likely even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/d1b18314-562a-48bc-83d6-90610cdd6257\/content\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more plastic pollution in our soils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in our oceans. Scientists estimate that more than half of the world\u2019s human population might have plastic<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/the-plastic-in-our-bodies-health\/#:~:text=The%20study%20is%20just%20now,plastic%20passing%20through%20their%20bodies.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passing through their bodies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers are still trying to understand what all that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/the-plastic-in-our-bodies-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic is doing to us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to the soil, but some recent studies have found that microplastics can change the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2352186422000724\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structure of the soil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and potentially<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10538034\/#:~:text=MPs%2C%20due%20to%20their%20small,root%20elongation%2C%20and%20nutrient%20absorption.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere with plant growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they enter the plant tissues through the soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are steps we can take to reduce the use of plastic in our gardens, ultimately helping to protect our health and the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_166243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-166243\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"5b6530\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #5b6530;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-166243 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/shutterstock_1040682619-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/shutterstock_1040682619-jpg.webp 1000w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/shutterstock_1040682619-519x346.webp 519w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/shutterstock_1040682619-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-166243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography via Shutterstock\/Nachaliti.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to start reducing the plastic used in your garden.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Swap your plastic plant labels<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for wooden sticks, stones, or even popsicle sticks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love the look and the fun of painting rocks as reusable labels! You can get paint markers, too, to keep things less messy with the kids,\u201d says Nicole Baker, a biologist with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildcenter.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Wild Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an interactive science museum in New York\u2019s Adirondacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Instead of buying plastic ties and stakes<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use natural twine to tie up plants and wooden or bamboo stakes to support them. You could even use a sturdy branch from your backyard or a big stick as a stake. These materials break down naturally and are safer for the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Give the plastic pots or containers you have<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a second life. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can wash, sanitize, and reuse them. \u201cIf they start to break down, you can often use them as drainage material in larger pots or garden beds,\u201d says Georgia-based entrepreneur and gardener Adria Marshall. Marshall, the founder of a plant-based hair care company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoslay.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecoslay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has been gardening alongside her mother and grandfather since the age of 12 and is on a mission to reduce single-use plastics in her garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have loads of old plastic pots or seed starter trays you\u2019re not using, you may also be able to return some to your local greenhouse. \u201cThis plastic costs money for those nurseries, many of which are mom-and-pop-owned shops and farms,\u201d says Baker. \u201cMany businesses will welcome the return of their plastics, and they will reuse them. This helps out the local business and keeps that plastic out of the landfill. Photography courtesy of Adria Marshall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do <\/span><b>need seed starter trays or pots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consider your options. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead of buying plastic seed trays or pots, use items you already have around the house,\u201d says Marshall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can likely repurpose items such as coffee cans, egg cartons, and maybe even old casserole dishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bosch has found a lot of success using cedar seed starter trays. \u201cIt holds up phenomenally well. You would think they would rot, but they don\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also look for grow bags made from natural fibers such as cotton, burlap, jute, hemp, terracotta, and clay pots or biodegradable options like those made from coconut coir, peat, or compressed paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baker has even had success planting directly into straw bales. \u201cThey act as both the container and as a growing medium. Straw bales get bonus points because they can be composted after the growing season for future use as a natural fertilizer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Instead of using plastic weed barriers or synthetic mulch<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use compostable materials such as straw, grass clippings, wood chips, newspaper, or leaves. \u201cIt reduces plastic waste, and organic mulches also break down over time and add nutrients to the soil,\u201d says Marshall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bagged soils, along with the seed starter trays, are two of the biggest culprits of single-use plastic in home gardens, says Bosh, adding that, most of the time, your soil probably doesn\u2019t need much. If you need mulch or soil amendments, try to buy the biggest container you can. Some garden centers or even town landfills that have composting may offer refill stations where you can bring your own containers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt hasn\u2019t been as hard as I thought,\u201d says Bosch, who was determined to find ways to farm without using plastic. She started by removing about two-thirds of all the landscape fabric she used before eventually removing all landscape fabric and plastic netting, using natural mulch or cover crops to control weeds instead. The hardest part has been finding an alternative to the plastic irrigation tubing, as tubes with fabric are lined with resin and copper is simply cost prohibitive. \u201cWe\u2019re buying the highest quality we can find so we\u2019re not replacing it every year and can patch it as needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can start by targeting one thing at a time, and it might not be perfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Briana Bosch started her Colorado flower farm, Blossom and Branch, the fifth-generation farmer\u2014her family had a dairy and corn farm\u2014mimicked what her family had always done: plastic landscape fabric to control weeds, plastic seedling trays, plastic netting, even plastic irrigation tubing.
