{"id":165793,"date":"2024-10-11T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/?p=165793"},"modified":"2024-10-11T09:11:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T13:11:40","slug":"not-typical-grocery-store-coop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2024\/10\/not-typical-grocery-store-coop\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Ground With Grocery Stores Changing the Way We Shop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Detroit, the grocery landscape is a story of struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the number of Detroit residents identifying as food insecure reached<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitfoodpc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pdfs\/DFMR20-Report-20221103-CORRECTED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69 percent.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This was further exacerbated by the decline in the number of grocery stores\u2014from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/detroit\/2022\/11\/04\/grocery-stores-detroit-declined-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">74 in 2017 to just 64 by 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. None of the remaining grocery stores, in a city where more than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neilsberg.com\/insights\/detroit-mi-population-by-race\/#:~:text=Racial%20distribution%20of%20Detroit%20population%3A%2012.22%25%20are%20white%2C,are%20some%20other%20race%20and%203.75%25%20are%20multiracial.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three-quarters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the population identifies as people of color, were owned by people of color. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbcfsn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DBCFSN) knew this had to change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 14 years in development, in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncbaclusa.coop\/blog\/detroit-peoples-food-co-op-is-now-open\/#:~:text=Member%2Downer%20of%20the%20Detroit,to%20Detroit's%20North%20End%20community.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spring of 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hope emerged in the form of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/detroitpeoplesfoodcoop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit People&#8217;s Food Co-op<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (DPFC). It\u2019s the same story for the majority of food co-ops. However, membership does have its perks. The DPFC\u2019s 4,000 members pay fees to join the cohort, which gives them voting power in electing a board of directors who work to ensure that decisions about what is sold, how it\u2019s sold, and how the store is run reflect member values. The profits of the co-op go towards operational expenses and any profits above and beyond are distributed evenly among co-op members who recycle the monies back into the local economy and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a model steeped in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grocery.coop\/food-coops\/history-of-co-ops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of co-operative movements, often led by marginalized groups seeking equality and stability in harsh economic conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pccmarkets.com\/sound-consumer\/2020-07\/grocery-story-how-food-co-ops-transformed-an-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perceived<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of the counterculture movement of the mid-late 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, co-ops gained a reputation as the antagonist to the industrial food system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joy Emmanuel is a veteran co-op researcher and developer based in Vancouver. &#8220;Co-ops are often very involved in supporting the growth and resiliency of the local food system,\u201d she says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, according to Cooperatives for a Better World, food co-ops do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/betterworld.coop\/sectors\/sector-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two and half times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more business with local farms and product makers than conventional grocers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta take-action\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"Take Action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grocery.coop\/all-coops#:~:text=Use%20our%20store%20locator%20to%20find%20a%20food%20cooperative%20near\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">Take Action<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Find a co-op in your community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of DPFC\u2019s organic produce is sourced from Detroit\u2019s Black-led farm projects, such as the D-Farm run by the DBCFSN and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandurbanfarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oakland Avenue Urban Farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while DPFC\u2019s democratic voice rests with its members\/owners, on the other side of the county in West Oakland California, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandelagrocery.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandela Grocery Co-op<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a bit different. Here, the employees of the co-op are the owners instead of the customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the co-op has 11 full-time team members, five of whom are owners, and six who have embarked upon a year-long candidacy, taking courses and learning what it takes to run a food business. Store manager Anj Talley believes this model is more equitable than a member-owned co-op.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a consumer co-op model, operations of the store are much like a traditional grocery store, with a hierarchical structure that includes managers and middle managers, with decisions being made at the top of the triangle,\u201d says Talley. \u201cIn a worker\/owner model, the owners of the business are in the store talking to the team and the customers, making decisions collectively, on a much more flat level.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/betterworld.coop\/sectors\/sector-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ed that when $1,000 is spent at a food co-op, $1,604 is generated in the local economy. Photo by Victor Mwangi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is Mandela Grocery Co-op the only grocery store within a 33-block radius, says Talley, but in West Oakland, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandelagrocery.coop\/aboutco-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> systemic racism and gentrification have segregated the community, opportunities for small-scale businesses are limited. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncg.coop\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Co-op Grocers <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCG) helps independently owned food co-ops maximize members\u2019 success, and to grow the co-operative grocery sector in size and scope. Currently supporting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">164 food co-ops operating more than 230 stores in 39 states with combined annual sales of more than $2.6 billion, their 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grocery.coop\/article\/2023-food-co-op-impact-report#:~:text=This%20content%20is%20based%20on,230%20stores%20in%2039%20states.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Impact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report paints a picture of more than 1.3 million consumer-owners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grocery.coop\/article\/2023-food-co-op-impact-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promotion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of local and organic foods alongside environmental stewardship, community involvement and the fair treatment of workers that advocates of co-ops say has gained the trust of consumers who prioritize sustainability and ethical consumerism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFood co-ops today tend to be more varied in how they are set up, reflecting change in the food system, competition from big food chains, and varied community needs,\u201d says Emmanuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Milwaukee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outpost.coop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outpost Natural Foods Co-op<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opened in 1970, just as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/single-use-plastics-101#what\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single-use plastic use was gaining popularity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its convenience and affordability. \u201cIt was important to the people who formed the co-op that it operated with conservation in mind,\u201d says Margaret Mittelstadt, director of consumer relations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165807\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"7c7e7d\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7c7e7d;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165807 not-transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Modern-Farmer-Co-ops-Solar-panels-on-Outpost-Credit-rood-photo-credit-Outpost-Co-op-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Modern-Farmer-Co-ops-Solar-panels-on-Outpost-Credit-rood-photo-credit-Outpost-Co-op-jpg.webp 1280w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Modern-Farmer-Co-ops-Solar-panels-on-Outpost-Credit-rood-photo-credit-Outpost-Co-op-560x315.webp 560w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Modern-Farmer-Co-ops-Solar-panels-on-Outpost-Credit-rood-photo-credit-Outpost-Co-op-1200x675.webp 1200w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Modern-Farmer-Co-ops-Solar-panels-on-Outpost-Credit-rood-photo-credit-Outpost-Co-op-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar panels on Outpost Co-op&#8217;s roof. Photo courtesy of Outpost Co-op<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From its conception, the consumer\/owner co-op has reflected the desire of its member community and has never packed groceries in plastic bags, instead encouraging customers to use reusable bags. Its efforts in sustainability have expanded to include solar panels on the roof of one of the co-ops\u2019 four stores to generate power and reduce the store\u2019s carbon footprint.
