A formidable goal, to be sure, but the former Bay Area chef is inspired by the years she spent immersed in Northern California\u2019s food culture, where locally and sustainably produced food and drink is standard.<\/p>\n<p>Ghiorse had stopped cooking professionally by the time she had moved back to her hometown of Greenwich in 2014; years of cooking at scale had been physically demanding and stressful, and she was ready to expand her knowledge and skills. Photography by Rebecca Poirier.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She began learning about the area\u2019s food system and volunteering with local endeavors like the town\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenwichct.gov\/1775\/Sustainability-Committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainability committee.<\/a> The committee helps guide Greenwich in advancing sustainable policies and practices that impact its natural environment, economy, and community. As chair of the committee\u2019s food systems sector, she noticed \u201ca gap,\u201d she says, \u201cin general awareness of the deeply ingrained, harmful impacts of our industrial food system.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta take-action\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"TAKE ACTION\" href=\"https:\/\/iclei.org\/our_network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">TAKE ACTION<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Does your town have a sustainbility committee? Photography by Maggie Menendez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Living in the activist hotbed of San Francisco\u2019s Mission District helped her realize the connection between systemic racism and food access. \u201cIt\u2019s fraught with deeply rooted practices of exploitation,\u201d says Ghiorse, \u201cbeginning with the enslavement of Africans, the genocide of Indigenous peoples, and extraction of soil watersheds, and natural and social ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned about the importance of bridge building, network weaving, cross pollinating between initiatives, and convening people around food, and,\u201d she emphasizes, \u201cusing the power of gathering as a lever for social change and healing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta learn-more\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"LEARN MORE\" href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2024\/04\/how-to-be-a-food-policy-advocate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">LEARN MORE<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Find out how to be a food policy advocate in your community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"svg mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-svg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To address all of these distinct yet intersecting issues, TFN is made up of several sub-organizations, including the Greenwich Food Alliance (GFA), The Foodshed Forum, and a resource library. The GFA is a community of practice, assembling business leaders and government officials in an informal group bound by shared interests and expertise. Members network, share ideas, and learn about issues and advocate for policy surrounding food, such as making SNAP benefits available at nearby farmers markets. The Foodshed Forum is the educational arm, partnering with organizations to host events such as a current three-part lecture series entitled \u201cHeritage Foodways: Seed, Hearth &amp; Taste\u201d at local libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The resource library, available on the website, offers a wealth of information including <a href=\"https:\/\/thefoodshednetwork.org\/thirty-ways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thirty Ways to be a Food System Changemaker<\/a>, concrete suggestions people can take to be changemakers. Photography by Maggie Menendez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ghiorse runs TFN full-time; it\u2019s self-funded on a shoestring budget, but she is working towards non-profit status and finding a fiscal sponsor so she can begin fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>Myra Klockenbrick, land and water Sector chair of the Greenwich Sustainability Committee and co-director of Greenwich Pollinator Pathway, credits Ghiorse with bringing up a conversation that is not natural to Greenwich. Although Greenwich is particularly affluent, the town has initiatives such as community gardens and a food pantry, as <a href=\"https:\/\/alice.ctunitedway.org\/downloadreport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29 percent of the community<\/a> experiences financial hardship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#8217;s really deepened our awareness of the diversity in our population,\u201d says Klockenbrick. \u201cShe has this knack and grace of not being on her high horse, but educating us deeply about our food system, both good and bad in ways that aren&#8217;t scolding but always uplifting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAli&#8217;s brought this food system conversation to Greenwich,\u201d says Sarah Coccaro, the Town of Greenwich\u2019s assistant director of environmental affairs. \u201cThere was conversation around food systems,\u201d she adds, \u201cbut there wasn&#8217;t any framing or awareness of the food system with a sort of equitable racial justice lens on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta TAKE ACTION\">\n<div class=\"mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-flex\">\n<p><a class=\"full\" title=\"TAKE ACTION\" href=\"https:\/\/www.growarow.org\/starting-a-campaign-in-your-communi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full_link<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex\">\n<p class=\"title mfo-wysiwyg-custom-cta-title h1\">TAKE ACTION<\/p>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p>Would you like to &#8220;Grow a Row&#8221; for your community?
