Instead, it\u2019s brimming with in-season fruits and vegetables that were harvested less than 25 miles away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The selection has not only introduced Martinez to new ingredients, such as eggplant, but she\u2019s learned to cook with them thanks to her children, who receive free classes through their school. \u201cThey make broccoli soup. Photography courtesy of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pantry is just one location in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feedoc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s network of nearly 300 distribution sites; the 41-year-old organization serves an average of 430,000 people per month who are experiencing food insecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About three years ago, the southern California food bank added something novel to its system: a 40-acre farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feedoc.org\/stories\/introducing-harvest-solutions-farm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvest Solutions Farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Irvine, fresh produce is grown specifically to be distributed to Second Harvest\u2019s partners such as the school pantry. Photography courtesy of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most food banks operate by gathering unwanted and donated food and distributing them to food pantries and other programs so the people who need the sustenance are able to access it. But those donations can be tenuous. Recently, inflation and supply chain issues have made it even more difficult to maintain operations\u2014particularly at a level that addresses the rising need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-u-s\/key-statistics-graphics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventeen million US households<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced food insecurity at some point in 2022, according to the US Department of Agriculture, a number that grew as a result of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvest Solutions Farm, which operates on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/screc.ucanr.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> University of California South Coast Research and Extension Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (REC) land, grows various crops throughout the year\u2014from cabbage and broccoli to zucchini and watermelon\u2014that is then harvested and driven two miles to the food bank\u2019s warehouse, allowing the organization to quickly distribute the perishable goods throughout the county.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2024\/07\/community-fridges-101\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"239ba2\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" style=\"--dominant-color: #239ba2;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-162804 size-medium has-transparency\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Community-Fridge-LM1-560x99.png\" alt=\"Learn More: Want to find a community fridge? Second Harvest gains access to free land (the organization pays for water use and some equipment), and the soil health of UC\u2019s otherwise unused plots is supported. Because the farm relies primarily on volunteers\u2014an average of 170 per week\u2014there\u2019s also an educational component: The community has the chance to connect with farming and food in a way that shopping at a grocery store can\u2019t offer. \u201cPeople are losing touch with agriculture,\u201d says Darren Haver, director of the REC system and interim director of South Coast REC. \u201cThis partnership allows a lot of volunteers that would have never set foot in an agricultural field to actually experience it and learn about it and have a greater understanding of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteers, in turn, help make the project economically feasible. \u201cThe most innovative thing about it is the produce is affordable to a food bank, to us, because the labor is done by volunteers and that allows us to take [the food] in at prices that are competitive with the state co-op, (under 30 cents per pound on average, on par with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafoodbanks.org\/hunger-data-reports\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> California Association of Food Banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),\u201d says Keller. \u201cIt&#8217;s a relatively small part of our supply chain in all honesty, but it is one that we 100 percent control.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162883\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-dominant-color=\"91a783\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" style=\"--dominant-color: #91a783;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162883 has-transparency\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Aerial-shot-of-Harvest-Solutions-Farm-560x286.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Aerial-shot-of-Harvest-Solutions-Farm-560x286.png 560w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Aerial-shot-of-Harvest-Solutions-Farm-768x392.png 768w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Aerial-shot-of-Harvest-Solutions-Farm.png 1095w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography courtesy of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The farm also reinforces Second Harvest\u2019s mission to provide dignified access to food and nutritional security, which is not only making sure people like Martinez and her family have consistent access to food but ensuring that the fare is truly healthy. \u201cIt\u2019s something that is not only going to feed your family but nourish your family,\u201d says Keller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Harvest Solutions isn\u2019t the first of its kind (other farm-to-food-bank programs exist across the country, including at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seedsofhopela.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeds of Hope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spfb.wpengine.com\/farm-orchard-grub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Plains Food Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Texas and Golden Harvest Food Bank in Georgia), the scale of the farm is unique. And it\u2019s something those involved think can be replicated elsewhere, particularly with strong partnerships in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe model that we\u2019ve had around the country and almost around the world is that our expired, rejected, quality-impacted foods are made available to food banks at discounted prices or for free and we pat ourselves on the back thinking that we\u2019re addressing waste,\u201d says A.G. Kawamura, the former secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture and chairman of the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solutionsforurbanag.squarespace.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solutions for Urban Agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kawamura, a farmer himself, started other, smaller versions of Harvest Solutions and was integral in getting the project up and running. Some of the food banks she visited would give her canned food, for which she didn\u2019t have the ability to open, eat or cook. She would return to the places that had fresh produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family has been settled in an apartment for two years, and the school-based pantry has been incredibly beneficial to her, both for the convenience (it\u2019s accessible year-round) and the quality and variety of the produce. Her kids sometimes walk straight to the kitchen to show her their latest cooking skills.
