The star-studded film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kissthegroundmovie.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiss the Ground<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring celebrities Woody Harrelson and Tom Brady, put the movement on the map in 2020, claiming that regenerative farming could be the solution to, not the cause of, climate change, biodiversity loss and soil erosion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does regenerative agriculture mean? There is still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2021\/09\/defining-regenerative-agriculture-terms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no hard and fast definition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> despite this excitement and celebrity endorsement. Now, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairr.org\/news-events\/insights\/regenerative-agriculture-blog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 percent of the biggest agribusinesses in the world use the term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all in different ways. It\u2019s official: Regenerative agriculture <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2021\/07\/what-is-greenwashing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been hijacked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two organizations want to put an end to the wild west of claims and prove, through certification, that food labeled regenerative is genuinely the gold standard of sustainability and not just another marketing buzzword.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not quite that simple. Even these two organizations\u2014Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) and the Land to Market\u2014can\u2019t agree on what, exactly, regenerative farming means. Elizabeth Whitlow, executive director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/regenorganic.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regenerative Organic Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the non-profit that governs ROC, says its new standards came into existence because \u201corganic isn\u2019t enough.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The certification, funded by the Rodale Institute, Patagonia and Dr Bronner\u2019s, insists on five practices to improve soil health: integrating livestock, keeping the soil covered, minimizing soil disturbance, incorporating diversity and zero chemicals, as well as a soil test every three years. Plus, there are rigorous worker and animal welfare standards, such as paying staff a living wage and ensuring animals can display natural habitats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of those principles are missing from the federal organic program,\u201d says Whitlow, who views the social and animal welfare outcomes as just as important as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2021\/07\/report-soil-carbon-credits-need-more-consistency-to-reduce-emissions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon these practices should, in theory, store<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But she maintains that \u201corganic is still really important,\u201d and that\u2019s why USDA organic standards, food grown without most pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, is the minimum baseline for the ROC certification.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoing no-till while using [glyphosate] is not going to regenerate the planet,\u201d says Whitlow, who points to the spectrum of regenerative farmers, some who prefer not to plough but still spray herbicides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nut farmer Benina Montes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=burroughs+family+farms&amp;oq=burroughs+family+farm&amp;aqs=chrome.0.0i355i512j46i175i199i512j69i57j0i512l2j0i22i30j69i60l2.2498j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burroughs Family Farms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in California says she chose to certify her almonds with ROC because of the environmental and economic benefits of ROC\u2019s practices and brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy having some diversity and building soil health, we will be more resilient to drought and major rain,\u201d says Montes. As a result of the ROC standards, livestock now graze the cover crops in the almond orchards, fertilizing the soil with their manure and providing space for beneficial insects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, the buzz of regenerative farming has provided ample commercial opportunities for Montes and the farm\u2019s almond butter, with contracts with major retailers such as Whole Foods and Amazon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s all tied together,\u201d says Montes, who sees strong synergies between soil health, staff well-being and profit. Her family farm has been organic certified since 2006,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but it only adopted the ROC standards in June 2022.\u00a0 She is excited to see if the new regenerative organic practices improve soil health, having tested it at the start of the certification process, with planned tests every three years to track progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But whether the soil will show changes or indeed lead to ROC\u2019s promised outcomes of \u201cmitigating climate change and restoring communities\u201d has yet to be seen. In theory, this means the standard directly measures and rewards a farmer\u2019s tangible progress on carbon storage, biodiversity, soil health and water, but it doesn\u2019t matter what practices a farmer employs to get there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the words of Land to Market\u2019s co-CEO, Chris Kerston, \u201cWe\u2019re letting the outcomes speak for themselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust by removing chemicals doesn\u2019t mean that the land is healing,\u201d says Kerston. \u201cYou can feed an animal grass and still overgraze the hell out of the land.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Land to Market brand certifies land through its third-party Ecological Outcomes Verification (EOV) methodology developed by Savory Institution founder and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/allan_savory_how_to_fight_desertification_and_reverse_climate_change?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TED Talk phenomenon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Allan Savory more than 20 years ago as a management tool for graziers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ROC certifies a wide spectrum of crops, livestock and fibre, Land to Market only covers animal products: meat, dairy and leather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Land to Market frames its products as coming \u201cfrom land that is regenerating.\u201d If farmers, through an independent EOV test, show that the ecology\u2014based on soil health, carbon storage, biodiversity and water\u2014is improving, then their land can be certified and they can sell their animals for a premium to brands that increasingly want to reduce the impact of the products, such as EPIC Provisions, Timberland and Applegate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149953\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149953\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-149953\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065-231x346.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065-231x346.jpg 231w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065-768x1153.jpg 768w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065-666x1000.jpg 666w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5d465a90-b2ed-466e-8cb3-b4d59175f065.jpg 853w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography courtesy of Cabriejo Ranch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For livestock farmer and Land to Market certified producer Reuben Hendricks of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cabriejoranch.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cabriejo Ranch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, good ecology is good for business. The higher prices he can justify are \u201cjust the gravy on top\u201d of focusing on land quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[We] make more money by improving the land management,\u201d says Hendricks. At his ranch, they perform short-term monitoring of data points such as species diversity and the amount of bare soil. The results have impressed Hendricks, too. In a carbon test, the organic matter in the sample has increased from one percent in 2018 to slightly less than five percent in 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis holds and stores water for longer, increases the fertility of the soil and diversifies plant species, which increases nutrition to the animals,\u201d says Hendricks. It also means \u201cmore carbon in the ground.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of prescribing practices that farmers can or can\u2019t do, Kerston says it\u2019s a \u201cmodel of continuous improvement,\u201d which is accessible to any farmer, whether they are on degraded land or a top-performing producer, as long as they are improving the state of the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton suggests this model could be \u201cmore open to innovation\u201d than practice-based certifications, because an outcome such as carbon sequestration could be achieved through any number of mechanisms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Whitlow from ROC maintains that it matters what practices you use to get to the outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can load my truck up with coal dust and spread it all over my fields. What&#8217;s that going to do to my carbon?\u201d asks Whitlow. \u201cYou can totally game the system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kerston, however, insists that bad practices such as using synthetic fertilizer consistently show up in the data. \u201cIf you&#8217;re using the wrong tools, we&#8217;re going to see it in the outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149954\" style=\"width: 519px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-149954\" src=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-519x346.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-519x346.jpeg 519w, https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography courtesy of Cabriejo Ranch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But outcomes of the land don\u2019t show the whole picture in a globalized food system. Although feedlots are banned, Land to Market doesn&#8217;t yet monitor animal feed. This means that a farmer\u2019s land could be verified to be regenerative, but they could still feed their animals soy and corn sprayed with chemicals from deforested sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why the product itself is not regenerative, only the land on which the animal is raised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Land to Market community is growing at an impressive rate, with five million acres and 1,152 farms being monitored through EOV and \u201cdoubling every six months,\u201d according to Kerston.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROC currently certifies more than one million acres of land globally, 142 certified farms and nearly 50,000 smallholders (farms between one and four acres) but is limited because producers have to be organic certified first, a process that takes three years. During this transition period, farmers have to adhere to organic regulations without benefiting from the price premium. There are currently 8.3 million acres of organic certified land in the US.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newton highlights that exclusivity isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing. \u201cCertification programs encourage the high-performing producers to push the boundaries of what\u2019s possible.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe role of government and regulation can be to push up the bottom,\u201d says Newton.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the aim for these certifiers is for all farming to be regenerative. But for the government, brands and consumers to support it, they need to know what that means first. While questions remain around who gets to define regenerative agriculture, at least there are two clear criteria and definitions.
