{"id":147366,"date":"2022-09-11T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-11T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/?p=147366"},"modified":"2022-09-12T11:36:16","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T15:36:16","slug":"no-till-farmland-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2022\/09\/no-till-farmland-value\/","title":{"rendered":"No-Till Practices Can Help Boost Farmland Value"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No-till farming, a technique long known to save farmers time, resources and dollars, is now shown to actually add value to the land on which it\u2019s practiced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/08\/220815123352.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by North Carolina State University, the practice of no-till farming can increase agricultural land value. Researchers found that just a one-percent increase in no-till farming can equate to a $7.86-per-acre increase in land value in Midwestern states, where the study was focused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When researchers honed in on Iowa only, they found no-till farming could have an impact on land value to the tune of $14.75 per acre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conventional tilling practices involve farmers making multiple passes over a field, first to till the soil and then to plant seeds. By contrast, no-till practices eliminate the first step, and farmers plant seeds in fields without tilling. As a result, the land is left with crop residue after harvest. No-till farming is considered the more environmentally friendly option, as it requires less fuel and soil disturbance. The research showed that untilled land has lower rates of soil erosion and less nutrient runoff when compared to conventionally tilled land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, around 37 percent of farms use no-till techniques across the US, including \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong adoption rates in the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic states and the Midwest,\u201d the study found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial and time-saving benefits of no-till farming is not new information\u2014according to a 2021 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/blog\/2017\/11\/30\/saving-money-time-and-soil-economics-no-till-farming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDA report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a farmer\u2019s switch to a no-till process on a 1,000-acre swath of land can save roughly $8,500 in fuel annually and eliminate nearly 67 hours worth of work per pass over the field. But this study is the first to put a dollar amount on the value no-till farming can add back to the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThis study suggests that farmland benefits translate into land value benefits, which is typically not considered in debates on no-till pros and cons, and, ultimately, whether or not conventional-till farmers should convert to no-till practices,\u201d said Rod Rejesus, professor of agricultural and resource economics at NC State and corresponding author of the paper, in describing the research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conduct the research, the team compared data sets from census survey responses that asked farmers in more than 12 Midwestern states about the market value of their land. They then combined the land value data with satellite-based data on the prominence of no-till farming practices in the same states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team also used the same process and data sets from Iowa to get a direct picture of how the results play out in the state of Iowa alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan in the future is to apply the same research technique to other parts of the country to see how they compare to the results in the Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even small changes can make a big difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1754,"featured_media":147368,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":[],"meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[33067],"tags":[33085],"article-theme":[],"class_list":["post-147366","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-farm","tag-ecosystem"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.8 -
