Rototillers are even more destructive than plows in that they turn the soil to dust and still create a plow pan. Look at the soil in a long term no-till field and you will find crumbly, absorbent structure. Except for the rare no-till organic farmer, organic farming is less environmentally friendly than chemically dependent farming.

Said no scientist ever! You are an MD (medical doctor), not a scientist. What could you possibly know about science other than what you were taught in medical school, which, in case you didn’t realize, is not a study of science per se, it is a study of the latest theories of disease and how to stop\kill said diseases in the body. Leave the science to the scientists.

It might be worth your while to Google it. Groundbreaking stuff (excuse the pun)

Look into Dry Farming Collaborative, they may have some good ideas.

The right mechanical ingenuity will come up with right sized equipment. We know some genius paving machinery designers & makers for the local to global markets – they live to improve the working world. Let’s get them together with the right, representative organic farmer specs for what size efficient machine power is most needed. Market gardener sized grows could use & share a mulching mower such as my female landscaper friend has been using on yards & estates all over our valley for 30 years. Let’s talk via gmail. I will contact Jeff Moyer & Maria Rodale. Looking forward. Thank you for such a good article. More …

I have also for the past 3 years. Never till the wood chips and leaves that I get for free. My soil use to be white lumps. Turning in a foot of leaves only caused the plants to be robed of the nitrogen they needed because the composing leaves used the nitrogen. Now the leaves and wood chips shade the soil and prevent the microbes from being baked to death. Also the soil never dries out. Between the rows I keep 3-6 inches of chips and leaves to prevent weeds from germinating. If they come, they are easier to pull without a hoe. It wil take 7 years to start achieving high density foods on the Brix Chart which is tested using a Refractor Meter.

Google Gabe Brown you tube. He farms about 2000 acres in North Dakota. Just animal manure for fertilizer. Keeps his ground covered 365 days and grows cash crops with a net profit that surpasses his neighbors all the time.

Check out the No Till Growers online community. They host a really helpful podcast and interview a variety of market farmers using some really interesting no-till techniques for the small scale market farm! Frith Farm in particular has some great ways to knock down cover crops without a roller crimper.
